Death, taxes and if you ask someone what the best film ever made is they will say The Shawshank Redemption.

Good film about triumph over despair but best film? No.

Not any more, apparently...

Always does my head in that. I liked the movie, but it's about as thought provoking as Lassie. Which brings me nicely on to Batman. The personification of over hype. Look away now, if you don't want a plot spoiler.
Basically Batman is on the horns of a dilemma and this is the thought provoking part of the movie. He operates outside the conventional rules of society and this has forced him to evaluate his existence, in a world where he advocates that citizens observe the rules pertaining to civil obedience. He is in the throes of a moral conflict based on his method of dealing with society's thugs, set against the backdrop of his vision of a euthopian society where the law tackles all of societys ills. And that's all very well, if it wasn't for one little thing.
YOU'RE F*CKING BATMAN YOU DOZY FANCY DRESSED PR*CK. THIS ISN'T BERTRAND RUSSELL OR SIGMUND FREUD, IT'S A CARTOON CHARACTER WHO FIGHTS THE BADDIES. SNAP OUT OF YOUR SELF OBSESSED FAGGOTTY MELODRAMATIC LITTLE HISSY FIT AND JUST KICK THE F*CKERS UP THE HOLE. AND BY THE WAY, WE COULD DO WITHOUT A LOVE CONNECTION AS WELL. HOLY F*CKING MID LIFE CRISIS ON A STICK, BUT YOU ARE SOME WHINGING LITTLE F*CK.
Well, that's my take on it anyway. It has it's moments, and Heath Ledger is okay (100 times better than that over indulged Mr Nicholson) but other than that, it's just a guy in a funny suit.
You wanna see a good movie, go watch "The edge of Love" which deals with an incident in the life of Dylan Thomas. I saw that as well this wek which means, not only is Batman not the best Movie I've ever see, it's not even the best movie I've seen this week.
And it's only Tuesday.

RE: The Dark Knight

edge of love... weak.

Alfie, when I heard about the Oscar calls were mostly due to his death, but after seeing his performance, it does truly deserve a nod.
Not once do you see the brokeback cowboy or just an actor trying to be scary. but you do see a very scary person indeed.

RE: The Dark Knight

Finally saw this last weekend.
Good popcorn cruncher, probably the best Batman film so far IMO, but that's all it is. Best Movie Ever? No chance.

Biggest plus is Ledger's performance. I can't see how anyone could think that he's aping Nicholson. Jack's Joker was much like the majority of his characters - a subtle adaptation of his off-screen persona, that leaves the audience fully aware that they are watching 'Jack Nicholson as....'.
Ledger's Joker was far more genuine and complete performance, verbally and physically. He was deranged, unhinged, clinging by a hair to sanity, and was utterly convincing. Maybe not worth an Oscar, but he completely stole the film. The 'disappearing pencil trick' was the best bit in it.

Downsides... couldn't get over Bale's incessant growling whenever he pulled on the Batsuit. It just sounded silly. In fact Bale doesn't seem right as Batman, not sure why. TBH, I don't think anyone has bettered Keaton to date. And the plot got more and more contrived as the film went on. I'm all for suspending disbelief, but at times the film pushed event causality to the limits of plausibility.
"Ah.. so the Joker staged the entire 15 minute chase sequence preceeding his arrest, knowing that he would be captured and knowing that Dent and Token Totty would be transported away separately by bent coppers enabling him to set up an elaborate trap for... zzzzzz"
Oh, and I didn't buy Dent's 'transformation' into Two Face at all... a supposed paragon of virtue, who loses his squeeze and half his face, and is all of a sudden threatening to blow a kid's head off. "The Joker wanted to turn the best of us." He didn't have to try that hard did he? An convoluted trap and 5 minutes alone in a hospital room, and all of a sudden the DA has become Cheeky Charlie Manson. And for a film that was clearly trying to take an outlandish comic book concept and ground it in as much dirty reality as possible, Dent's deformed face looked totally stupid. Less Two Face, more Tales from the Crypt, IMO.
Oh yeah, and the soundtrack was boring n' all. Not a patch on Danny Elfman's original, although granted, it did have a different 'vibe'.

Oh, and Mr Boyce... if you thought that TDK was a disappointment, I take it you haven't seen this year's feeble Indiana Jones movie?
That redefined the word 'disappointment' for me. 20 years of waiting for a terribly written/acted/directed steaming turd of a film.
Fatty Lucas is getting good at that, isn't he.... I half expected bleedin' Jar Jar Binks to make an appearance at the end....

You spent 20 years of your life just waiting for the new Indiana Jones movie, now that is a serious film critic...

I just thought all the lip-smacking was just like JN. However, as I'm very much of the "what is all the fuss about" mould, I can't say I took too much notice of JN's Joker either, so my arguement isn't that strong there...

Indiana Jones was painful. Yes, I genuinely went in, expecting to leave the cinema 20 years younger, and left just feeling kind of embarrassed...

Maybe I should watch TDK again (I'll wait until it's on Freeview though - I've wasted enough money on it), and just to fathom out where this fantastic film is, that everyone else is watching.

I wholly agree with everything negative you say about the film though!

Well I was hardly camped out in a cave, shunning all stimuli until the new Indy film was finished... wink
...but RotLA is one of my favourite films from back when I was small, and so I will admit to feeling a wee bit excited when the new one was announced. And crushingly disappointed when I saw it. Sad

Is that called the 'Star Wars Effect'? Or the 'George Lucas Quandry'?
